We all know that refined carbohydrates should be something we don’t eat in large quantities, but did you know just how bad for you refined flour is? Read on to find out.
1. It has no nutritional value whatsoever.
That’s right, when white flour is processed, nutrient rich ingredients such as the wheat seed bran is actually removed, making the product useless in terms of nutrition. Dietary fiber is also reduced in the processed by 97%. Vitamin E, B, and 50% of the calcium is also lost.
2. Harmful ingredients are added
After stripping the flour of it’s natural nutrients, artificial ingredients are added. A compound called Potassium Bromade is added, which is known to be harmful to cells.
Un-appetising ingredients such as chalk and alluminium are added to give the desirable white fluffy texture consumers are looking for.
Bromade is considered a category 2B carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, making it a ‘possible’ carcinogen to humans.
3. Processed white flour is an insecticide
Processed white flour is pumped full of so many chemicals that it is actually poisonous to insects, killing any which try to eat it. Insect killer isn’t something you would normally look for in the ingredients for your loaf of bread.
4. Have you heard of L-cysteine?
L-cysteine is an ingredient found in processed white flour that you really don’t want in there.
It is added to quicken the baking process, but it is made using either animal or even human hair.
The prduct usually comes from China where regulations are poor.
5. Diabetes causing ingredients
To give white bread its white fluffy appearance, an ingredient called alloxan is added.
Alloxan has been shown to destroy beta cells in the parcreas, linking it to the onset of diabetes.
The next time you chose a loaf of bread, avoid white loaves and instead go for a brown organic loaf using natural ingredients.
